When Michael Henry Gill first started his publishing company back in 1856, he had a firm commitment to education in mind. The Gill family is still actively involved in the company and that commitment remains as strong now as it was then. Today, we are one of Ireland’s leading educational publishers. We have established some of the best-known author brands in both the primary and post-primary markets, and continue to aim for excellence in the development and production of print and digital materials for schools in Ireland. We are also the suppliers of some of the most respected literacy and numeracy resources available worldwide, which are appropriate for use in Irish schools and are designed to support both teaching and learning in the classroom and beyond.

In 2016, Gill & Macmillan became Gill, a wholly Irish owned company once again. As we look to the future, Gill Education aims to be at the forefront of the latest developments in education in Ireland. We have a real desire to improve the education experience and are genuinely excited by our part in it. We will continue to bring products to the market that reflect our company’s mission: to respond to our customers’ needs with outstanding content for learning and life.

A short history of the company

Books for school and college have always provided life-blood for Gill. When Michael Henry Gill went into partnership with James McGlashan in 1856 one of the first books they published was A Complete System of Bookkeeping. There followed Gallery’s Essentials of History and Literature and a wide range of books on the Greek and Latin Classics, the applied sciences, the plays of Shakespeare, and Joyce’s Outline of the History of Ireland which remained in print for decades. Likewise Kennedy’s Intermediate Poetry, the Catechism of Catholic Doctrine and Sheehan’s Apologetics could be found in homes and school bags throughout Ireland for almost half of the 20^th century.

Gills always innovated and Casey’s Introducing Biology was the first textbook in the subject ever published for Irish schools.

Another milestone was the three-part history of Ireland for the then Intermediate Certificate by Donncha Ó Corráin, Elma Collins and Mark Tierney which blended illustrations with text in a manner never seen before. Shortly afterwards the publication of Exploring English and Soundings revolutionised the teaching of English.

Gill & Macmillan also pioneered the publication of textbooks in subjects such as Economics and Law for students at Irish universities and other third level colleges.

Improvements in printing technology during the 1980’s enabled the widespread use of colour illustrations, and books like Complete Geography and Focus on the Past changed forever the image of school books for teachers and students alike.

If the arrival of colour seemed revolutionary, it will prove mild relative to the influence of digital communication which is beginning to impact fundamentally on the way in which information is presented and conveyed.

However, just as McGlashan and Gill innovated in the nineteenth century, Gill Education is embracing the digital age 150 years later as its many digital products and support material for primary and post-primary schools testify.
